Lee was born June 11, 1983 in Billings, Montana. In 1987 his family moved to Texas and he has lived there ever
since.
Since
a very young age Mike has been around livestock and has acquired a love for
all animals. He learned to ride
a horse so young that it was as if he was born riding one. This is really where Mike’s love for rodeo began.
He started out riding steers when he was ten and just moved up the
ranks. Peewee bulls, junior
bulls, and then senior bulls. When
Mike was fourteen he started to attend “open” bull ridings and won his
first Open Bull Riding Championship when that same year.
High school rodeo competition was the logical next step and Mike qualified for
the National High School Rodeo Finals two years.
Mike's outstanding accomplishments in rodeo earned him several offers from college rodeo
teams. Mike opted instead to turn
professional as soon as he turned eighteen.
Two
weeks after Mike turned eighteen he received his permit, and filled it with
his first show. He won Norco,
California a Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Challenger Tour in June.
Through the rest of that PBR season Mike placed at a number of
events, and ended up the year in fifty-eighth place.
The following year (2002) he qualified to for the to the PBR Cup Tour
in March.
Mike qualified for his first PBR World Finals in 2002 and was the
runner-up Rookie of the year.
Mike
also filled his Pro Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) permit soon after he
purchased it after his eighteenth birthday.
It hard been hard to juggle both the PBR and PRCA. Mike
has continued as a member of the PBR Cup Tour and has been limited to
the PRCA shows he could attend this year.
It was at the PRCA rodeo in Fort Smith, Arkansas, on May 29th that
Mike received a skull fracture as a result of a head to head collision with
a bull. Mike underwent emergency surgery following the accident
to remove a blood clot. Mike who always wears a helmet when he rides
believes his helmet saved his life and prevented an even more serious
injury. When the accident occurred Mike was in third place in
the PBR Cup race. It wasn't until August 29th Mike was able to
returned to the arena. If anyone had wondered whether he was
ready he put all doubts to rest immediately. Mike won his first
event out, the Belton, Texas, Humps-n-Horns event. If there were any
doubters left he won the Atlantic City BFTS event. Mike went into the
2003 Finals sitting in 6th place. Not bad for someone who was
sidelined for three months.
Mike
was not really happy with the 2003 Finals. He drew four real good
bulls and was 1 for four. As the season came to a close Mike was in
6th place in the BFTS and in 16th for total money won in the PBR in 2003
with a winnings total of $93,569.18.
Mike
is a very dedicated person not only to rodeo, but also in life in general.
As fellow bull rider Lee Akin stated in an interview with Pro Bull Rider "That
dude, in the short time that I've known him, is one of the most focused
individuals I've ever met. It seems like he has this innate sense
about his ability, and he has a terrific work ethic. He tries his guts
out every time." He is an animal lover and appreciates a good bucking bull, or
horse. He is interested in all aspects of the bucking bull and
rodeo industries. Mike is a
dedicated Christian Cowboy and lives his life for God.You can search for Rodeo Tickets on this page. You can search by Rodeo such as PBR Tickets or NFR Tickets or by Venue such as Thomas and Mack.
