San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo
Kick up your boot heels, lasso a pair of tickets, and head on down to the 54th annual San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo -- a brand new rodeo! This year's action-packed event, which runs Feb. 1-16, writes a whole new page in local rodeo history. All the heart-pounding, hoof-stomping excitement will take place at the brand new SBC Center, a state-of-the-art, multi-use complex and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo's new "home on the range."
The 17,000-seat SBC Center stands adjacent to the Rodeo's old home at the Joe & Harry Freeman Coliseum in the 3000 block of East Houston. The new venue promises excellent sight lines for all, more seating, a high-tech scoreboard and sound system, and (with the additional boxes available) the opportunity to purchase season tickets for the first time.
San Antonio's Stock Show & Rodeo has a long, proud history. The first event in 1949 had a record (for then) quarter of a million visitors and has grown bigger and better every year, with more than 1 million visitors moseying through the gates in recent years. Thousands of youngsters from all over Texas come to the SA event to show the stock in which they've invested a year's worth of their time, money and love. Over the years, the non-profit SA Stock Show & Rodeo Exposition has awarded more than $18 million in scholarships, grants and endowments to Bexar County and Texas youth.
The Rodeo itself showcases the finest professional cowboys and cowgirls in Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rodeo events, including bareback-bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping, saddle-bronc riding, barrel racing and bull riding. Zany rodeo clowns entertain the crowd while protecting cowpoke participants from becoming "hoof ornaments" for disgruntled bulls and broncs. And there's plenty of big-time prize money involved, with the cowboy or gal with the most winnings riding off with the "All-Around Cowboy" title and grand prize.
When the real cowboys pack it in for the night, it's time for the stars to come out -- entertainment stars, that is. The roster of past performing artists reads like a country music hall of fame and has "tipped a Stetson" to other music genres in recent years. Brooks & Dunn kick off the shows on Sat., Feb. 1, at 1 and 7:30 p.m. Other performers scheduled include a lineup of Texas music icons -- Pat Green (Feb. 6, 2 and 7 p.m.), Robert Earl Keen (Feb. 8, 1 p.m.), Jerry Jeff Walker and Charlie Robison (Feb. 7, 7 p.m.) and Lonestar (Feb. 8, 7:30 p.m.). For a complete show roster (unconfirmed at presstime), call (210) 225-4237.
Outside on the grounds is a mind-boggling array of attractions that includes a carnival midway. The Family Fair runs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily and offers "Bud City, Texas" (a Main Street replica straight out of the Old West), pony rides, "Two-Step Market Place," "Texas Star Marketplace," "Rodeo Hall of Fame" and plenty of live music and good times. There's also the "Wizard's Challenge," "World of Agriculture" and "Texas Trails" in which to adventure.
And during all this, youngsters from all over the Lone Star State are competing in the largest Junior Livestock Show in the world, with high hopes of their animal winning the coveted title of Grand Champion. There's plenty of action at the livestock barns, too, and the sheepdog trials, cutting-horse and team-penning competitions and llama pack races are just as exciting as the big arena events.
